Staff of the Chair

General characteristics of the Chair

The Chair of English Lexicology and Stylistics was reorganized from the Chair of the English Philology in 1975. Its founder and first head was doctor of philological sciences, full professor Valeria Kukharenko. At that time the staff of the chair consisted of 12 lecturers, only two of whom were specialists of higher qualification: full prof. Kukharenko V. and ass. prof. Gorshkova K.

At present 19 lecturers (17 of them – candidates of philological sciences) work at the chair under the guidance of full professor Irina Kolegaeva. All of them used to be post-graduate students at the chair of English lexicology and stylistics. The following doctors of philological sciences: O. Karpenko, O. Matuzkova, T. Dombrovan and candidates of philological sciences: O. Nikulina, O. Meletyeva, A. Tomas, Vit N., O. Naboka, I. Onischuk, O. Dzhumatiy were post-graduate students of the chair. Nowadays these specialists make up the core of the English philologists working at different chairs of the department as well as different universities of Odessa. Professor Golubenko L., dean of the Romance-Germanic Philology Department is also a post-graduate student of professor Kukharenko V. And a famous showman Filimoniv O., well known in Ukraine and abroad, is still proud of belonging to this scientific school.

Today four out of nine chairs of the R G Ph department in ONU are headed by the specialists who prepared their candidate and doctoral theses at the chair of lexicology and stylistics. Professors and associate professors offer wide range of special courses: from Business English to highlights of mass and pop culture in the English speaking world. Materials and methodological skills obtained during trainings abroad are effectively applied in the teaching process.

The chair is the basis of the philological library comprising more than 3 thousand volumes of scientific literature on general and special linguistic issues. The monographs, candidate and doctoral theses, scientific journals, dictionaries and encyclopedias are a solid theoretical basis used both by beginners as well as by experienced philologists.

General information

The Department of German Philology makes its history from the German Sector, founded at the Institute of National Education (INO) in Odesa by the decree of the Presidium of the Main Directorate of Vocational Education of Ukraine of June 26, 1924. The main aim of the German Sector was the preparation of teachers and educators for German education institutions (schools, orphanages, kindergartens, clubs, libraries) in the places of residence of Germans. In 1924, the first set of students (40 people) were enrolled for a preparatory department with a term of study of 1 year, after which the training continued at the Faculty of Social Education for 4 years.

In 1933 Odesa German Pedagogical University was founded on the basis of the German Sector. Professor A.N. Strem, Associate Professors Denk, Hoffmann, Neumak taught at the Institute; here lectures were also given by German Communists who had fled Hitler's Germany, including writer Willi Bredel and playwright Friedrich Wolf.

After 1938 the Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages was founded, including the faculties of the English, German and French languages. It trained teachers for schools and higher education institutions and in 1960 it merged with Odessa State University. It was then that the Department of German Philology started its chronology. At that time, it was headed by associate professor, Ph.D in linguistics Kozhukhar D.A., a researcher in the field of theoretical grammar of the German language. Leading Germanists such as Y.Y. Neudorf, A.M. Prodilailo, M.Z. Jatsy made a contribution to the study of history of language and lexicology. For many years distinguished lecturers worked at the department: Sofronova Zh.Y, Orlova I.M., Solomonova T.S., Lipets’ka E.V., Druteiko E.S., Sukhovets’ka L.I.

In the early 70s the department was headed by doctor of philological sciences, full professor V.G. Taranets’. For many years he was actively engaged in phonetic studies of the German language and the history of its development. The outstanding scientist is the author of the energy theory of speech. Six published monographs testify to the results of his numerous studies. Professor V.G. Taranets’ also created his own scientific school: under his supervision 17 PhD theses were defended, whereas his students work at our university as well as other leading universities of the country.

From 1998 to 2015, the department was headed by candidate of philological sciences, professor, dean of the faculty of Romano-Germanic philology Golubenko L.M. Lydia Mykolaevna was the organizer of cooperation and exchange of students with the University of Regensburg (Germany) and the University of Landau (Germany). Thanks to cooperation between universities, Odessa became a twin city of Regensburg.

From 2020 to 2023, the department was headed by Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor N.Yu. Golubenko.

The center for German country studies was founded at the department. It has a large number of resources for country studies as well as scientific and methodological information.

General information

The Translation Department (the youngest at the faculty) was founded in 1996. The department has been preparing professional and highly qualified translators of three foreign languages (English-German-French, English-Modern Greek- Spanish, English-Italian-German) for around 20 years.

The fruitful cooperation with different organizations, like Odesa City Council, provides an ability for our students to be involved in real translation practice to improve their skills, using different types of translation. Our students can take part in many events like Odesa City Day, DEC Education Weekend, Fool Day and Comediada. They also translate at various medical and music conferences. Such events presuppose a usage of diverse translation types from consecutive to simultaneous, giving a wide circle of experience for future work.

Each year allows students to take part in such a translation practice. Translation practice is not only a formal part of education where students work with bland texts but also a real work with real clients, giving current text on daily issues.

After a while, translated texts appear on organizations` sites or can be used in their future work. For example, our students have been translating some texts for sites of the Odesa Academic Theatre of Musical Comedy named after M. Vodyanoy and Odesa National Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre. Our department also provides school and university teaching and learning practice for students in first and second languages.

Our students are our main priority. All our lecturers take care not only about high teaching standards of translation and related disciplines but also about creating healthy and friendly atmosphere for students. We regularly organize so-called «translation teapot talks», where everyone can share their translation experience and learn something new.
Every year witnesses a new volume of our book of translations named «Nathnenia» (means "inspiration" in Ukrainian), where you can find literary translations of our students.
Students may choose translation materials, which makes translation process more interesting and useful and reveals their artistic skills and talents.

The Theory and Practice of Translation Department has technically equipped classrooms for various types of translation. Our senior students work with special translation equipment for simultaneous and consecutive translation and special cat-tool programs.

General Information

The Department of Foreign Languages for Humanities Faculties was established in 1985 as a result of the division of the University Department of Foreign Languages into two separate structures due to the need for a differentiated approach to teaching students of the humanities and natural sciences faculties. At present, the DFLHF is one of the largest structural subdivisions of the University.

The DFLHF has preserved and multiplied the achievements and traditions that were initiated by its former heads - talented scholars and educators:

  • Doctor of Philology, Full Professor Emma Nushikyan (1985-1987);
  • Doctor of Pedagogy, Full Professor Vladimyr Skalkin (1987-1993);
  • PhD in Linguistics, Professor Lidiya Golubenko (1993-1998).

The formation of the Department has been greatly influenced by scientific ideas of Prof. Skalkin V. L., eminent teacher and methodologist, author of more than 140 research and methodological works - monographs and articles, as well as numerous textbooks issued in thousands of copies. The research works of V. L. Skalkin have been published in Ukraine, Russia, Moldova, Bulgaria, Poland, Germany and France. More than 40 years of his scientific activity were dedicated to the problem of psycholinguistic substantiation of the principles of teaching speaking. Prof. Skalkin’s ideas have been reflected in numerous research papers both at the Faculty of Romance and Germanic Philology in I. I. Mechnikov National University and far beyond the borders of our country.

Since 1998 the department has been headed by PhD in Linguistics, associate professor Nadezhda Vit, author of more than 70 scientific and methodological works, a disciple of the scientific school, established by Doctor of Philology, Full Professor Valeria Kukharenko, and the successor of scientific ideas, introduced by Prof. Skalkin. The basic concept of the development of the Department at present is training highly qualified specialists with a profound knowledge of a foreign language, which meets the requirements of the time.

One of contemporary challenges of the DFLHF is implementation of the Bologna initiatives and the European education system.
The goal of the Department is providing high-quality education for the applicants of I-III educational-qualification levels; implementation of multilinguism concept as well as stimulation and support of foreign language learning for professional, academic and personal purposes.
In connection with the growing internationalization of higher education, strengthening of integration processes and the growing role of the English language as lingua franca, the most important for the university and the department in particular, are the following directions of work:

  1. to change the approach to teaching English to student-centered, that is, to switch from traditional technology of learning - delivering knowledge - to a problem-oriented, competence-based one, aimed at deepening the practical knowledge of students;
  2. to train the staff able to take part in projects of academic mobility, international conferences, publish research works, communicate with foreign colleagues in English.

Within the framework of a joint project "English for Universities" of the British Council in Ukraine and the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine (2014-2018) 13 DFLHF staff members participated in a number of training, namely: “ESP Teacher Development Course”, “EAP Teacher Development Course”, “Course Module Design”, “Assessment and Evaluation”, “Observation and Feedback”, “English for Academics”, “Professional Award in Teacher Development”,”CiVELT” (three parts: 1. ESP Essentials 2. Language of ESP 3. ESP course and materials. ESP teacher CPD”). As a result, the methodology of teaching English has been changed; new syllabi - “English for Specific Purposes”, “English for Academic Purposes. Academic Writing” have been designed and piloted into the education process.

The DFLHF cooperates with specialism departments, which makes it possible to develop syllabi, taking into account the content of the majors. The teaching staff of the Department, together with the specialists of the Humanities faculties, hold thematic discussions and Round Tables, actively engage gifted students in presentations on their research at the University annual scientific students’ conferences.

Since 2013, I. I. Mechnikov National University has been holding an international contest "Mots d'or" under the auspices of the Association for Promotion of Business French (APFA, Paris, France).

The work of the DFLHF is carried out by three sections:

  • the Section of the English Language (20 lecturers, Head of the section - PhD in Linguistics, associate professor Anufriyeva N.)
  • the Section of the French Language (4 lecturers, Head of the section - PhD in Linguistics, associate professor Ivanova N.)
  • the Section of the German Language (3 lecturers, Head of the section - PhD in Linguistics, associate professor Tupikova T.)

Teaching Activity

The lecturers of the DFLHF work at all the Humanities faculties and departments:

A collection of reports is published.

In cooperation with the lecturers of specialism disciplines, the staff of the Department continue to prepare students for participation in Annual University Students’ Scientific Conferences in foreign languages, considering the preparation of reports as an effective way of organising students' self-study work, one of the forms of monitoring the quality of foreign language competence, a means of motivation and an important component of professional training of future specialists.

2019 has marked the 26 anniversary since the first scientific students’ conference in foreign languages was held. During this time, the students have prepared 2516 reports in English, German and French.
