Over 65 participants stepped into the roles of delegates representing various countries for the day, working across three committees. They discussed pressing international issues, engaged in negotiations, advocated for their nations' positions, and sought common solutions.
The event offered a fantastic opportunity not only to gain hands-on experience in diplomacy but also to hone skills in communication, critical thinking, negotiation, and teamwork.
For ONU, hosting this event marked another step forward in fostering an international environment, supporting student initiatives, and engaging young people in discussions on global challenges. The event brought together proactive students eager to gain a deeper understanding of international cooperation mechanisms and the role of diplomacy in the modern world.
On October 5, 2026, Rector Viacheslav Truba met with Frédéric Petit, a member of the French National Assembly, who was visiting Odesa. Also present at the meeting were Tetiana Nanushka Podkovyroff, Associate Professor at the Department of Foreign Literature, and Yurii Hrinchenko, Head of the International Relations Department. As part of his mission to strengthen social, cultural, and economic cooperation between France and Ukraine—including in the scientific and educational spheres—Frédéric Petit outlined several potential initiatives to intensify collaboration between the universities and research centers of both countries. In particular, Mr. Petit noted the significant interest among French researchers in studying social, political, and legal issues arising from the war. Rector Viacheslav Truba affirmed the readiness of Odesa I.I. Mechnikov National University to facilitate such cooperation and expressed openness to proposals from French partners. The Rector noted that the teaching of French language and literature, as well as research into French culture and history, have long been integral to the university's traditions. Frédéric Petit and Viacheslav Truba discussed specific steps for joint efforts to foster cooperation between the two countries and agreed to hold a follow-up meeting.
From 23 to 29 September 2026, a delegation from Odesa I. I. Mechnikov National University paid a working visit to the University of Gdańsk, Poland. The visit focused on strengthening inter-university cooperation, exchanging experience in the organisation of the educational process, and identifying new areas for joint academic and research activities.
The ONU delegation included Rector Vyacheslav Truba, First Vice-Rector Maiia Nikolaieva, Vice-Rector for Research, Teaching and International Cooperation Andrii Smitiukh, Head of the Educational Department Svitlana Gvozdii, and Head of the International Relations Office Yurii Hrinchenko.

About the Event
The Black Sea Day 2026 Symposium will be held on 30-31 October 2026 at Odesa I.I. Mechnikov National University in a hybrid format (on-site and online).
The Symposium aims to bring together researchers from different fields to explore the Black Sea and the wider region from a broad range of disciplinary and interdisciplinary perspectives.
It welcomes research on Black Sea hydrology and oceanography, with a particular focus on marine and coastal processes, hydrodynamics, water resources, climate variability and change, environmental dynamics, and the functioning and resilience of aquatic ecosystems. Contributions addressing environmental monitoring, pollution, biodiversity, ecosystem services, and the sustainable management of the Black Sea are also encouraged.
The programme also provides a platform for interdisciplinary research on the wider dimensions of the Black Sea region, including its societies, history and cultural heritage, languages and literature, politics and international relations, law, economy, and other related topics.
Researchers, academics and experts from different fields are invited to submit papers presenting the results of their research.

Applications are now open for the final round of the Climate University for Virtual Exchanges (CLUVEX).
The Virtual Exchange (VE) is a great opportunity to experiment interacting in an international environment – especially if you have considered applying for a traditional student exchange. Participating in the VE Week does not require an advanced knowledge base in natural sciences. More important is to be interested in climate change-related issues and workshopping in an international team. The VE Week is open to students of all fields coming from EU and EU Neighbourhood countries to explore the latest scientific perspectives on climate change: from natural and social sciences to the arts.
On 17th February, 2026, a formal online meeting took place, at which the rector of the ONU, Vyacheslav Truba, and the rector of Klaipėda University, Artūras Razbadauskas, signed the provisions of the Memorandum of Understanding. The memorandum outlines the main areas and principles of cooperation between the two institutions in the educational and scientific spheres.
Expanding academic mobility programs, intensifying scientific exchange, coordinating efforts within the framework of alliances of European universities, creating a basis for joint educational and scientific projects – all these opportunities are laid down in the provisions of the Memorandum of Understanding. All these aspects are necessary to form a solid foundation for the future partnership between Klaipėda University and I. I. Mechnikov ONU.
On 13th February, 2026, as part of the visit of the Ambassador of Odesa in Lithuania, Alvydas Medalinskas, to Odessa I. I. Mechnikov National University, a meeting was held with the rector Vyacheslav Truba and the head of the international relations department Yurii Hrinchenko, during which the current state and prospects of cooperation with Lithuanian partners were discussed. With Alvydas Medalinskas’ assistance, an online meeting with the leadership of Klaipėda University was organized, headed by the rector Artūras Razbadauskas, and with the participation of the first vice-rector of ONU Maiia Nikolaeva and the vice-rector of ONU for international cooperation Andrii Smitiukh.
On the meeting the parties identified the priorities of the partnership, in particular, the conclusion of an agreement on academic mobility Erasmus +, the signing of a memorandum and the development of cooperation within the framework of EU-CONEXUS. The rectors also noted the positive results of the meeting and expressed hope for further intensification of mobility after the establishment of peace in Ukraine.
On 27-29 January 2026, the 2nd International Winter School on Disinformation was held online, organised by the Odesa Centre for Disinformation Studies (OCDS) at Odesa I. I. Mechnikov National University.
The Winter School aimed to strengthen theoretical and applied expertise in disinformation studies, information manipulation and hybrid threats through a combination of theoretical lectures, methodological approaches and practical case studies.

The Odesa Centre for Disinformation Studies (OCDS) is pleased to announce the 2nd OCDS International Winter School devoted to the challenges of disinformation in contemporary world politics.
The Winter School will be held online from 27 to 29 January 2026, and all sessions will be conducted in English.
This year’s programme focuses on analysing how disinformation strategies influence global political and communication processes. Participants will examine the evolution of Russian propaganda across different regions, evaluate the impact of misleading narratives on international security, and explore global experiences in combating disinformation and propaganda.
The School aims to broaden the understanding of analytical and research methods used to study disinformation, while also encouraging young researchers to engage in expert-level discussions about information manipulation, propaganda tools, and their significance in foreign policy.

Seminar Description: The power of words can be no less potent than traditional weaponry. Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine has turned fake news into a powerful tool of imperial propaganda. From the onset of the war, Russia launched an organized propaganda campaign aimed at shaping public opinion to justify its aggression, undermine Western support for Ukraine, and mislead both domestic and international audiences about the true causes and imperial nature of the war. The full-scale invasion underscores the growing significance of informational factors, proving that the power of words rivals tradiitional weapons. Hence, resisting Russia’s information offensive is a vital task for the survival of the Ukrainian nation.

Participation in the VE week does not require in-depth knowledge in the field of natural sciences. What matters most is an interest in climate change issues and the willingness to take part in seminars as part of an international team.
In March and April 2025, students from the Bachelor’s and Master’s translation programmes at Odesa I.I. Mechnikov National University took part in a series of professional workshops organised by the European Parliament. The events were held within the framework of a European Parliament’s grant project implemented under the Master’s programme “Translation from English and a Second Foreign Language into Ukrainian.”
In May 2025, faculty members from the Department of Translation at Odesa I.I. Mechnikov National University took part in a study visit to Stockholm University.
As part of the European Parliament-funded project “Master’s Degree Programme in Conference Interpreting”, Dr. Olga Grynko, Head of the Department of Theory and Practice of Translation, and Associate Professor of the Department of Theory and Practice of Translation, Dr. Iryna Rayevska visited the Institute for Interpreting and Translation Studies at Stockholm University.
On the 16th-18th of April 2025, the Second International Research-to-Practice Conference “Climate Service: Science and Education” took place at the Odesa I.I. Mechnikov National University, which attended by 165 participants from 11 countries.
On the 18th of April 2025, Rector of Odesa I. I. Mechnikov National University Vyacheslav Truba welcomed a delegation from the German volunteer organization ERMSTALHILFT e. V. that arrived in Ukraine with a humanitarian mission. The First vice-rector Maya Nikolieva, the vice-rector for research, teaching and international cooperation Andrii Smitiukh, and the Head of the Office for the International Relations Yurii Hrinchenko attended the meeting. The German delegation consisted of 8 people, led by the Director of Board ERMSTALHILFT e. V. Simon Nowotni, along with the vice-director of the ERMSTALHILFT e. V., Martin Salzer, and the former member of the Bundestag, Beate Müller-Gemmeke.
On the 7th-11th of April 2025, an offline part of the VII training in the Erasmus+ ClimEd project titled “Developing skills to use climatic information and services for various climate-dependent branches of economy” took place at the Rovira i Virgili University, Spain. In the course of the training, the participants were learning to work with climate indexes and specialized software for creating sectorial climate web-services.
On the first week of April the Vice-Rector of International Cooperation of ONU, Andrii Smitiukh, met with the Vice-Rector of Education and Diversity of the Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt, Austria, Doris Hattenberger.
On the 7th -11th April the first spring school for approbation of the educational course C3 – Sustainable pathways and risk management in times of crises – took place at the Technical University of Liberec, Czech Republic, Зображення under the international project ERASMUS+ TransLearn.
