Department Specialization

Fundamental and applied research on biotic diversity and ecosystem functioning in the North-Western Black Sea region. Hydrobiological, botanical, and zoological studies of natural and artificial ecosystems of the Black Sea region.

Main Research Directions

1. Fundamental and Applied Hydrobiology, Ichthyology, and Zoology

• Faunistics, Systematics, and Morphology: Study of species diversity, distribution patterns, and migrations (including bird migrations) of vertebrates and invertebrates.
• Marine and Freshwater Hydrobiology: Comprehensive research of the North-Western Black Sea and adjacent water bodies (zoo- and phytoplankton, macrozoobenthos, phytobenthos); assessment of biotic balance and production of coastal ecosystems.
• Parasitology: Studies of helminths, parasitic mites, and insects.
• Population Ecology of Wild Animals: Study of spatial structure, abundance dynamics, and environmental factors.

2. Botany, Plant Physiology, Mycology, and Biogeochemistry

• Algology and Mycology: Systematics, morphology, ecology, and biogeography of micro- and macroscopic algae (as indicators, purifiers, and producers of biologically active substances); systematics and distribution of macromycetes and lichens in South-Western Ukraine.
• Floristics and Phytosozology: Studies of natural, synanthropic, invasive, and quarantine flora of the region; preservation of unique herbarium collections as a national asset of Ukraine.
• Plant Physiology and Biochemistry: Studies on the impact of long-term seed storage on seed viability; studies on emmer wheat growth; optimization of vegetable and ornamental crop productivity using microelements and growth regulators.
• Biogeochemistry: Monitoring the migration of nutrients and heavy metals in natural and artificial biocenoses.

3. Ecology, Nature Conservation, and Landscape Architecture

• Sozology and Nature Conservation: Scientific justification for establishing and expanding protected areas (national parks, nature reserves, sanctuaries); conservation of wetland biota and rare/endangered species.
• Bioreproduction: Development of technological foundations for breeding and housing rare and protected animal species.
• Landscape Architecture and Urboecology: Biological foundations of green space design; planning, management, reconstruction, and restoration of landscape design objects based on biocenotic approaches; study of symbolism in landscape art.

Specialties and Academic Programs

The department prepares specialists under Specialty 091 'Biology' (Bachelor's, Master's, and PhD levels), Specialty 206 'Landscape Architecture' (accredited Bachelor's program), as well as participating in teaching specialized ecological and biological components for Specialty 162 'Biotechnology and Bioengineering'.

Graduates of the department successfully work in research institutes of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, environmental protection and reserve management institutions, state and private enterprises in landscape design and urban greening, botanical gardens, municipal greening enterprises ('Miskzelentrestr'), agricultural research centers, ecological testing and diagnostic laboratories, as well as international environmental organizations (WWF-Ukraine, BirdLife International).
