  • 1970 – graduated from Odessa Polytechnic Institute.
  • 1981 – finished his post-graduate studies in the Institute of Applied Geophysics (Moscow).
  • 1982 – defended his PhD theses for the degree of candidate of sciences (physics and mathematics) in the Institute of Global Climate and Ecology (Moscow).
  • Number of scientific publications - over 200.
  • Main research interests: studies of ecology of the freshwater and marine ecosystems, atmospheric chemistry, radioecology, integrated monitoring of natural ecosystems, anthropogenic and climatic changes of the environment.
  • Participated at the Chernobyl accident consequences management. Awarded with State decorations.

Brief History of the Centre:

The Monitoring Centre was started in 1998 when the joint decision was made by Odessa National Mechnikov University and the Research & Production Centre “Priroda” (The Nature) of the National Space Agency of Ukraine within Odessa National University to establish the Centre of Aerospace Environmental Monitoring. Further on, in 2003, by the joint decision of Odessa National University, Odessa Oblast Council and Odessa Oblast State Administration the Centre was re-formed into the Regional Centre for Integrated Environmental Monitoring and Ecological Studies.

  • NitroEurope Project «Nitrogen Cycle and its Influence on the Greenhouse Gases Balance in Europe» is a project for integrated European research into the nitrogen cycle. The NitroEurope was built on a strong partnership between overall 62 institutions across Europe, Russia, China and Africa. NitroEurope is a part of the EU’s Sixth Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (FP6) and was run for 6 years from February 2006 until 2012. http://www.nitroeurope.eu/
  • The FP7 UP-GRADE BS-SCENE Project “Up-Grade Black Sea Scientific Network” Project is an FP7 EU funded project running from 2009-2013 that is building and extending the existing research infrastructure (developed under FP6 project BlackSeaScene 1) with an additional 19 marine environmental institutes/organizations from the 6 Black Sea countries. http://www.blackseascene.net/
  • The FP7 EnviroGRIDS Project “Building Capacity for a Black Sea Catchment Observation and Assessment System supporting Sustainable Development”. Project was funded by the EU FP7 Programme. The main objective of Project was to build capacity in the Black Sea Basin to construct, maintain and use modern Earth observation systems in order to contribute to the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS). The enviroGRIDS project aimed to gather, store, distribute, analyze, visualize and disseminate crucial information on the environment of the Black Sea catchment. Project is aimed at strengthening the capacities of Georgia, Russian Federation and Ukraine for biological and chemical monitoring of water quality in the Black Sea in line with the EU water-related legislation. At present the staff of the Centre participates in the following international projects:

  • The FP7 ÉCLAIRE Project “Effects of Climate Change on Air Pollution and Response Strategies for European Ecosystems” is a four year project funded by the EU's Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (FP7). The project will be running for 4 years, from October 2011 till December, 2016 and involves 39 partner institutions across Europe. http://www.eclaire-fp7.eu/
  • The FP7 PERSEUS Project “Policy-oriented marine Environmental Research for the Southern European Seas” is a research project that assesses the dual impact of human activity and natural pressures on the Mediterranean and Black Seas. PERSEUS merges natural and socio-economic sciences to predict the long-term effects of these pressures on marine ecosystems. The project aims to design an effective and innovative research governance framework, which will provide the basis for policymakers to turn back the tide on marine life degradation.   • The UNDP-EU EMBLAS II Project «Improving Environmental Monitoring in the Black Sea, Phase 2» - aimed at support to obligations fulfillment by Georgia, Ukraine and Russian Federation in the framework of Bucharest Convention and other respective Conventions and Agreements, as well as development and implementation of National pilot monitoring programmes for testing and harmonization of the developed by the EMBLAS-I drafts of cost-effective National Black Sea Integrated Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Programmes (NBSIEMAPN-BSIMAP). Project is funded by the EU and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Project duration is 42 months: July, 2015 –  December, 2018.
