About the department

The Department of Language and General Humanitarian Training of Foreigners is an interfaculty department, which, being previously an integral part of the Office for International Cooperation and Foreign Economic Affairs, later of the Institute of International Education, and today of the Faculty of Philology, currently has the necessary potential and experience to conduct high-quality language training foreign citizens in a variety of forms, focused on practical learning objectives.

Modern research of the faculty of the department has grown on a solid foundation of the achievements of philological thought and is represented by multidimensional results of activity over more than 50 years of work.

The department was formed in 1971 on the basis of the Russian as a foreign language section at the Faculty of Philology of Odessa State University. At different times, the department was headed by Ph.D. in Philology, associate professors Sorokina M.N., Drozdovsky V.P., senior teacher Solomonov V.G., senior teacher Bondarenko I.P. For a long time, the head of the department was Associate Professor Turutina M.F. In 1988-2014 The department was headed by Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor Ilyash A.E. Since September 2014 to April 2015 the duties of the head of the department were performed by candidate of philological sciences, associate professor Chernovalyuk I.V. From April 2015 to October 2016 and in October 2021 – Associate Professor Arefyeva N.G. In 2016-2021 The department was headed by Doctor of Philology, Professor Reva-Levshakova L.V. In November 2021, the department was again headed by Doctor of Philology, Associate Professor Arefyeva N.G.

The department studies: Russian, Ukrainian and English languages –​​ phonetics, vocabulary, grammar, speech development.

Scientific topics of the department:

 In 2012-2017 the scientific activity of the department was carried out within the framework of the scientific topic No. 242 “Improving the acceptance and methods of training foreigners in Ukrainian (Russian) language in professional purposes” (state registration number 0113U000604); term of performance: 1.03.2013-31.12.2017. Head of the topic – Ph.D. in Philology, Associate Professor Ilyash A.E., since June 2015 –  Ph.D. in Philology, Associate Professor Arefyeva N.G.

At present, the staff of the department is successfully working on the implementation of the approved scientific topic No. 324 “Linguistic cultural and lexicographic aspects of foreign language training” (state registration number 0122U002403); execution term: 1.02.2022-31.12.2026. The leader of the topic –  Doctor of Philology, Associate Professor Arefyeva N.G., responsible executor – Candidate of Philology, Associate Professor Chernovalyuk I.V.

Collections of scientific articles, collective monographs:

Many years of scientific and methodological experience of the staff of the department and specialists of leading institutions of higher education in Ukraine in the field of teaching Russian / Ukrainian as foreign languages ​​is the basis of the collection of scientific articles "Modern problems of methods of teaching languages ​​and teaching foreigners in Ukrainian universities" (editor board: N.G. Arefieva (editor in charge), E.N. Stepanov (scientific editor), E.V. Knysh, I.V. Chernovalyuk, K.A. Korneeva (responsible secretary), Odessa, ONU, 2016 ).

Based on the materials of the All-Ukrainian scientific-practical conference with international participation "Theoretical and practical problems of international training of foreigners in the aspect of international communication", a collection of scientific articles "International communication – polylogy of cultures (actual nutritional training of foreigners)" was published under the general editorship of prof. Revy-Levshakova L.V. (Odessa, ONU, 2019).

At present, a collective monograph “Modern problems of the methodology of language teaching and training of foreigners in the foundations of higher education” is being formed, dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the department of language and general humanitarian training of foreigners and the 30th anniversary of the preparatory department.

Conferences:

On November 8, 2018, the Department for the first time held the Student Scientific Conference "Scientific creativity of a foreign student: self-identical expression in the Ukrainian space", dedicated to the Day of Ukrainian Writing and Language, as well as World Youth Day and World Science Day. The conference was attended by 32 students from nine faculties of ONU, including masters of the Faculty of Philology, as well as students of the POI.

On May 16-17, 2019, the All-Ukrainian scientific and practical conference with international participation "Theoretical and practical problems of foreign training in the aspect of international communication" was held at the department.

Scientific and methodological seminars:

Since 2015, scientific and methodological seminars have been regularly held at the department, at which topical problems of the language training of foreigners are discussed.

Membership in the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine:

In 2017-2018 associate professor N.G. Arefieva was a member of the working group of the Ministry of  Education and Science of Ukraine on the development of materials for standardized assessment of foreign students in the language of instruction (Russian) at level B1.

Educational-methodical commission:

From 2014 to 2021 An educational and methodological commission worked at the department, whose activities were aimed primarily at ensuring the high quality of the published educational, methodological and methodical literature. At the time, the commission was headed by Candidate of Philology, Associate Professors Chernovalyuk I.V., Arefieva N.G., Lyubetskaya V.V., Doctor of Philology, prof. Reva-Levshakova L.V.

Currently, in connection with the accession of the department to the Faculty of Philology of ONU, the literature prepared for publication by the staff of the department is recommended by the educational and methodological commission of the Faculty of Philology. Candidate of Philology, Associate Professor Lyubetskaya V.V. is a member of the Scientific and Methodological Council of ONU named after I.I. Mechnikov. At various times, the members of the Council were Associate Professors Arefieva N.G., Chernovalyuk I.V., Doctor of Philology, prof. Reva-Levshakova L.V.

The members of the Academic Council of the Institute of International Education were associate professors Arefieva N.G., Knysh E.V., Lyubetskaya V.V., Chernovalyuk I.V., prof. Reva-Levshakova L.V., senior teacher Andrianova I. A., Semenyuk L. V., Shakhina Yu. G.

Thesis defense:

 In 1987 Art. teacher Department I. P. Bondarenko defended his thesis for the degree of candidate of philological sciences on the topic "The role of the language environment in mastering the Russian language: the lexical aspect" in the specialty 10.02.01  –"Russian language". The defense took place in the specialized academic council of ONU named after I.I. Mechnikov.

Candidate of Philology, Associate Professor N.G.Arefyeva defended her doctoral dissertation “Phraseology of Russian resettlement speeches of the South of Ukraine: linguoculturological and lexicographical aspects” in the specialty 10.02.02 – “Russian language”. The defense took place on December 22, 2021. in the specialized academic council D 08.051.05 of Oles Honchar DNU.

Obtaining an academic degree:

In 1990 Bondarenko I. P. received the title of associate professor Ph.D.

On January 25, 2013, by the decision of the Attestation Board of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, the title of associate professor was awarded to Ph.D. Chernovalyuk I. V. (certificate series 12 DC number 033961).

On December 22, 2014, by the decision of the Attestation Board of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, the academic title of associate professor was awarded to Ph.D. Arefieva N. G. (certificate series 12 DC No. 040901).

On November 26, 2020, by the decision of the Attestation Board of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, the academic title of associate professor was awarded to Ph.D. Lyubetskaya V.V. (series of certificate AD No. 005900).

The department offers a number of special courses to choose from, giving students the opportunity to gain deeper knowledge in the field of practical linguistics, stylistics and literature that interests them. For this purpose, practical classes are held in Russian / Ukrainian / English, providing the development of oral speech, active mastery of vocabulary, phraseology, phonetics, intonation, grammar skills, linguo-stylistic analysis of the text, theory and practice of scientific speech. Watching educational and feature films, meeting with figures of science, literature, art, visiting theaters, museums, exhibitions, acquaintance with the sights of Odessa help to successfully master the Russian language.

Education at the department is an opportunity to work independently according to an individual curriculum for the most diverse categories of students. This form involves a special curriculum, the implementation of control and final work. A certificate is awarded to those who complete the course.

In the field of educational and methodological work, the study of practical issues of teaching Russian / Ukrainian / English as foreign languages ​​is carried out.

The department provides consulting assistance on the following topics:

  • practical grammar of Russian / Ukrainian / English;
  • theory and practice of teaching syntax;
  • linguistic potential of the Russian literary text: teaching reading, analysis, interpretation;
  • typology of training tasks and exercises;
  • teaching phonetics;
  • practice of teaching phraseology in the aspect of linguoculturology;
  • theory and practice of scientific speech;

The department offers foreign partners/specialists to master Russian/Ukrainian/English languages ​​and translation skills to work in their specialty. The original system of exercises, textbooks will allow you to learn the necessary vocabulary within the chosen specialty without spending much time.

The staff of the department will readily respond to all proposals for cooperation. Depending on the needs and plans of foreign colleagues, we suggest using various forms of contacts:

  • as part of the conclusion of a multipurpose interuniversity / interdepartmental agreement;
  • as part of the creation of groups of authors for writing practical works;
  • within the framework of mutual business trips of employees for various kinds of consultations, discussions, operational joint preparation of scientific publications, working training materials, participation in seminars, etc.

The department is open for strategic long-term cooperation in the following areas:

  • a comprehensive program for the publication of educational literature;
  • drawing up curricula, programs of special courses and special seminars for scientists, interns and graduate students;
  • methodical organization of the educational process in Russian / Ukrainian / English for different categories of students.
