Chair of mathematical analysis

Teaching staff:

Mathematical analysis is the basis of mathematics education independing on the direction of students specialization, that’s why it is safe to say, that the chair exists as long as the university does, although it had another name some period of time. For example, when the university was built(1865), its name was – the chair of pure mathematics.

The chair is managed by Storozhenko Eleonora Alexandrovna (doctor of phys.-maths science, professor, the honorary degree is “Popular education merited employee of Ukraine”, the last time she has been reelected on the post of the chair-head in 2003) since 1975.

Such professors as V.O. Andreenko, M.L. Vasilevskiy, V.D. Didenko, V.I. Kolyada, V.G.Krotov (all of them are the alumnuses of Odessa University different years) had been working at the chair since 1991. The last four are now working abroad.
10 regular lecturers ensure now (2004-2005) the academic activity.

Scientific work:

Chair teachers ensure reading of the main courses on the faculties of mathematics, applied mathematics, mechanics, economics, psycology, and also on the ONU biological faculty – mathematical analysis, measure and integral theory, functional analysis, probability calculus and statistical theory. Besides, the chair ensures reading of a whole set of special courses for students of mathematical economics and classical mathematics groups, starting with the 3rd year.

The chair performs a large methodical work, foremost it’s the creation of the methodical literature on mathematical analysis in russian and ukrainian.
The text-book on mathematical analysis for economical faculty is worked through for the first time, existing methodical manuals for students of correspondance are enlarged and supplied.
Besides, the manuals on special guideline, and also on new directions in mathematics, are in the pipeline.

Each lecturer, who gives a lecture on mathematical analysis, - senior teacher Lisenko Z.M., senior teacher Matviuk L.V., associated professor Korenovskiy A.O., associated professor Vartanyan G.M. - has published his lectures on this course.
Several authors ( Storozhenko E.O., Divakova O.Y., Matviuk L.V., Tchornaya M.P.) have published methodical instructions on mathematical analysis for the 1st year students. Mathematical analysis lectures (with a large quantity of economical problems) for economists have been worked out long ago. But the publication is delayed due to the fault of editorial office.

The doctoral dissertations of Kryakin Yuriy Vladimirovytch and Stockolos Alexandr Mykhaylovytch were presented by the chair before the defense, but they have been defended their thesises in Poland, where they received their permanent job.

The scientific topic of the chair – “The function theory and shift operators theory” (state registration number is 229, order ONU 550 – 18 FROM 26.03.2001., professor Storozhenko E.O is the topic leader, the deadline of the topic 2001-2005).

All members of the chair take part in scientific work. According to the name of topic, the work is carried out in two main directions, two scientific seminars work in these directions. 8 teachers of the chair ( prof. E.O. Storozhenko, prof. V.O. Andriyenko, assoc.prof. A.O. Korenovskiy, assoc.prof. M.O.Malaxiano, assoc.prof. L.G.Kovalenko, senior teacher L.V. Matviyuk, sen.teacher E.Y. Leontchik) take part in the function theory seminar (the leader – prof. E.O. Storozhenko); functional theory seminar is organised by associated professor V.O.Tchernetskiy and senior teacher Z.M. Lisenko.

Quntity of scientific projects from 1991 to 2004:

The name of scientific project, wich is now in the pipeline, - “Optimization of inequation in harmonic analysis and in approximation theory” by agreement with DES of Ukraine F7/329-2001. A group of function theory teachers-specialists, with the professor of mathematical Institute NAN of Ukraine, G.V.Radziyevskiy, take part in this project

At the beginning of 90th yy. The theory function school which became well-known not only in Ukraine, but abroad, was formed at the mathematical analysis chair. All-union function theory school, where 150 mathematicians from different countries and cities of USSR. took part, was organised in 1991

Special rada for doctoral dissertations defending was organized by professor V.I.Kolayada from the mathematical analysis chair, in ONU in 1993. Unfortunately it broke up because of the departure of many professors abroad.

Viktor Ivanovytch Kolyada – professor of the chair received the indidvidual grant of Soros fund in 1993, and the individual grant of Soros’s professor – in 1996.

The Sorosses associated professor rank was confered to Viktor Dmitriyevytch Didenko in 1996 and Anatoliy Alexandrovytch Korenovskiy in 1997. The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine scholarship for young scientists was destinated to senior teacher M.O.Malaksiano in 2002-2004.

During many years and till now the chair establishes contacts for collaboration in the form of training, joint research, giving lectures with universities of different countries. Below there is an incomplete list of such universities:

Note, that the last visit of chair teachers to Marseilles (18.03 – 28.03.2003) was held under joint ukrainian-french program of scientific collaboration “Dnipro”. Professor V.O.Andrienko and associated professor A.A. Korenovskiy took part in this program.

The chair always keeps in touch with alumnuses, graduate students, doctoral students and ex-collaborators of the chair, who work in the other places and abroad at the moment.

Thus, professor P.Oswald (graduated from ONU in 1975, postgraduate study – in 1978, defended the candidate dissertation in 1978) arrived to to Odessa university in Febraury 2004.
For a long time he has been the chief-specialist of well-known company Bell Labs Lucent Technologies (USA). The lectures of P.Oswald(Best N-term
capasitance approximation on sparse grids) had gathered a large audience of IMEM teachers. зібрали велику аудиторію викладачів ІМЕМ.

Professor V.I.Kolyada(Sweden) gave a lecture “Transplantation theorems for ultraspherical polynoms” at the seminar on functions theory in December 2004.
V.I.Kolyada had studied in ONU, and then he had worked there more than 25 years.
The new results of V.I. Kolyada deserve extremely high marks and do a credit to the country, which he represents. It’s a pity, that this credit doesn’t belong to Ukraine. The ex-collaborators of the chair V.G.Krotov ( Minsk, Byelorussia), Y.V.Kryakin (Wroclaw, Poland), A.M.Stockolos (Chicago, USA)have been also present at the function theory seminar and have given the speeches in February 2004.

Students research scientific work:

Except teachers the students of 3rd-5th year and masters of 6th year take part in chair scientific work. Student M.O.Malaksiano have received Soros scholarship in 1995-1996, and the scholarship of Verkhovna Rada – in 1998-1999 for grate achievements in scientific work.
Students present their reports at annual scientific conferences of IMEM, and at other interuniversity conferences. Thus, 4th year students Rovnaya A. And Mykhaylenko N. have made reports and have been rewarded with diplomas at the 3rd international scientific conference on financial analysis of students and graduate students (Lvov,19 – 21.2004) in 2004.

Rovnaya A. – Net-reserve calculation program in life-assurance.
Mykhaylenko N. – An approximate answer on renewal equation.
6th year student Rabotnikov A.G. with research instructor Tchernetskiy V.O. have published an article “Approximate solution of some integral equations of risk theory” in the magazine “Applied statistics, actuarial and financial mathematics”. No.. 1-2, Donetsk, 2004, 227 – 230.

The students of mathematical analysis chair take part in annual International students Olympics.
The systematic lessons are organized during the whole year of education for this purpose. Associated professor Malaksiano A.M. have been conducting these lessons already 5 years.
Metelitchenko O.B. – the 5th year student has wun Grand Prix between the winners of International Olympics in Prague in 2001. This victory gave him the possibility to keep studying at University College London. The International Olympics took place in Skopje, Macedonia in 2004. Shlepakov O. and Sherbina A. - the students of the chair, were rewarded with 3rd grade diplomas.

The relations between schools and colleges:

The chair maintains close relations with secondary institutions. The chair-members (associated professor Korenovskiy A.A., professor Storozhenko E.O. etc.) have been conducting the classes with the pupils from Bielgorod-Dnestrovskiy College and carried out scientific-methodical guidance of college students solitary works during 10years period of time. Senior teacher of the chair – Leontchik E.Y. was designated the position of leader of mathematical subdivision in Odessa region humanitarian centre of out-of-school education and upbringing in 2001. She is a member of Minor Academy of Science juri.

Associated professor Korenovskiy A.A. issued the text-book “Examples of written tasks for entering exams 2001-2002 (with answers)” as the assistance for the students og IMEM ONU.
Associated professor Vartanyan G.M. has been conducting the control from the side of Odessa National University under the organization of joint written maths exam for the graduates of ukrainian schools.
The members of the chair (associated prof Vartanyan G.M., assoc.prof. Korenovskiy A.A., assoc.prof Malaksiano M.O., senior teacher Leontchik E.Y.) regularly take part in preparation and conducting the city, regional and international maths olympics.
