History of Department of Biochemistry

In 1901–1902 academic year at just organized medical faculty of Imperial Novorossiysk university the department of medical chemistry which was headed by the private ass. professor (since 1901 - extraordinary professor) of Imperial Novorossiysk university A. K. Medvedev has been organized.
 
In 1888 A.K. Medvedev has gained an honors degree and a rank of the medical officer in connection with the successful termination of Imperial army medical college. From 1893 to 1895 A.K. Medvedev worked in Imperial army medical college under the leadership of professors I.M. Tarkhanov and I.P. Pavlov. In 1893 he has defended the doctoral dissertation: "About the relation of leukocytes to hit in blood of some substances". In 1895 A.K. Medvedev by the invitation of extraordinary professor B. F. Verigo comes to Odessa where holds a position of the teacher of department of zoology, comparative anatomy and physiology on natural office of physical and mathematical faculty. In 1896 A.K. Medvedev has been elected by Council of university to a position of the private ass. professor of this department. Anatoly Konstantinovich began to teach the first in university training courses "Physiological chemistry of digestion and a metabolism in an animal body", "Elementary composition of substances of an animal organism, feedstuffs and digestion", and since 1897 he began to give with students a practical training in physiological chemistry. From the moment of the organization of department of medical chemistry her head - professor A.K. Medvedev began to give the course "Physiological Chemistry, Chemistry of Albumens and Their Next Derivatives, Carbohydrates and Fats, the Doctrine about Inorganic Enzymes and Digestive Juice of Chemistry of Digestive Processes (Blood and a Lymph)". In 1902 A.K. Medvedev has received a position of ordinary professor. The sphere of scientific interests concerned him mechanisms of formation of NH3 in an animal organism. He has proved direct influence of hormones of a thyroid gland on deamination speed in blood of phenylalanine, an alanin and aspartate, over 10 scientific works devoted to studying of processes of oxidation and the author of the first textbook on biochemistry who called "The textbook in physiological chemistry" were the author (in 1905). Medvedev A.K. I worked at a position of the manager of department till 1920. From the moment of the organization of department of medical chemistry within the first academic year professor A.K. Medvedev was the only teacher of department. In 1902–1903 academic year on department the second teacher – the private ass. professor V. V. Zavyalov has been enlisted.

V. V. Zavyalov has graduated from medical faculty of Imperial Moscow university, in 1899 at Tartu university has defended the doctoral dissertation, and in 1900 has moved to Odessa. For a year V. V. Zavyalov held a position of the laboratory assistant of department of medical chemistry of Novorossiysk university, and then has been transferred to a position of the private ass. professor of department. From 1903 to 1906 he worked at a position of extraordinary professor of department of zoology, comparative anatomy and physiology, and from 1906 to 1920 - occupied the post of ordinary professor of the same department. The main scientific achievement of Zavyalov is receiving a plastein during pepsinny digestion of proteins. After reorganization in 1922 the medical faculty of university in the Odessa medical institute of department of biochemistry at the Odessa state university wasn't. The new stage of biochemical researches at the Odessa university has begun in 1944 with the advent of professor Yu. V. Medvedev. Medvedev Yu.V. in 1925 the Kharkiv agricultural institute has finished and has come to postgraduate study, and has the same year gone to Leningrad where it under the leadership of the academician Kostichev S.P. specialized in branch of biochemistry of plants and microbiology. From 1926 to 1932 he worked in laboratory of biochemistry and physiology of plants of Academy of Sciences of the USSR. In 1932 he has passed into the Leningrad state university to the associate professor's position where the first in the USSR I have organized a course and a workshop on enzymes. He has developed a method of receiving ethyl alcohol from wood. In 1936 he began to work at institute of experimental medicine (Moscow) and has defended the doctoral dissertation: "The kinetic theory of biochemical processes". In 1937 he has been elected the manager of department of anatomy and physiology of plants of the Kharkiv university, and in 1938 - was entitled professor. After liberation of Odessa in 1944 - I have headed department of biochemistry and microbiology of the Odessa state university (ODE) and at the same time I held a position of the director of a botanical garden and the manager of department of chemistry of grain in institute of engineers of the flour-grinding industry. In 1949 under pressure of Lysenko’s the department has been liquidated. During 1933-1944 and 1949-1964 the course of biological chemistry at biological faculty the ODE was given by associate professor A.O. Ivanovskaya.

In 1964 the independent department of biochemistry which was headed by the doctor of medical sciences A.Ya. Rozanov has been organized. A.Ya. Rozanov was born in Odessa in 1929. In 1944 at 15-year age after early leaving school he has entered the Odessa medical institute from which he had graduated with honors in 1949. Same year he has entered postgraduate study. Under the leadership of professor D. A. Tsuverkalov he has prepared the master's dissertation which I had defended in 1953. In 1952 he has been taken on as the assistant to department of biochemistry of the Odessa medical university. On this post he has worked 10 years. For this period he has prepared the doctoral dissertation "A metabolism a thiamine and his phosphoric air and a disulfide in an animal organism". In 1962-1963 I worked at a position of the head of biochemical laboratory of institute of tuberculosis. In 1963 - the manager of laboratory of biochemistry of Institute of gerontology and experimental pathology of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences (Kiev). In 1964 I have defended the doctoral dissertation and has been invited in the Odessa state university to a position of the manager of just organized department of biochemistry. At a position of teachers, except professor Rozanov A.Ya. associate professor Golubtseva M. V., the associate professor Totsky V. N., associate professor Koval V. T. worked., assistant Karpov L.M.

At department the tracer laboratory which played a crucial role in the subsequent researches of staff of department was organized. In 1966 A. Ya. Rozanov was entitled professor. The scientific experience got by A. Ya. Rozanov at Institute of a gerontology and experimental pathology allowed it to organize at department the scientific direction on studying of mechanisms of a gerontogenez and a research of mechanisms of binding of a tetanotoxin in an organism, however studying of mechanisms of interaction of vitamins B an organism was the main direction of researches of department. Dynamics of distribution and metabolism in an organism of 14C-Thiaminum, 14C-nicotinic acid, a 35S-lipoat, a 14C-biotin, 14C-Riboflavinum was investigated. Researches of influence of extreme factors (a hypoxia, a hypothermia) on dynamics of distribution of vitamins B an organism had a certain scientific value. At department of biochemistry for the first time in the USSR were synthesized nikotinal-GAMK-14C and Pantogamum-14S. In researches of the mechanism of penetration of vitamins through biological membranes (on the basis of results of a research of accumulation of labeled vitamins and their metabolites in mitochondrions) it was shown that this process is carried out by means of specific proteins.

The special place in researches of department was taken by a problem of interaction of vitamins B an animal organism. In these experiments it was shown that introduction of a complex of vitamins which in the form of coenzymes take part in functionally connected processes leads to essential augmentation of accumulation of each of them in tissues. These researches allowed professor Rozanov A. Ya. to formulate a hypothesis of a joint proteidization of vitamins which enter in the form of coenzymes multienzymatic complexes. This hypothesis was accepted by vitaminology as one of possible mechanisms of interaction of vitamins B an organism. On this basis for the first time in the USSR at department of biochemistry ampuliс polyvitaminic drugs were framed.

For the period managements of biochemistry of department (1964-1975) under the leadership of Rozanov A. Ya. more than 20 master's theses were defended. 5 monographs and more than 200 scientific articles are written to them.
Since 1995 associate professor A. V. Zaporozhchenko became the manager of department.

Since 1980 at department, under the leadership of professor, the Dr.Sci.Biol. of Petrov S.A., the new scientific direction on studying the noncofermentic functions of vitamins was begun. In these researches it was shown what such catabolit thiamine as thiochrome is capable to regulate activity of a certain group of enzymes.

Besides, the catabolism in an organism of such vitamins as Thiaminum, lipoic acid, pantothenic acid and nicotinic acid was studied. In this direction more than 100 scientific articles, 1 textbook are published, it is protected 1 doctor's and 2 master's theses.

Since 2015 professor, the Dr.Sci.Biol. of Petrov S.A. manages department of biochemistry. The main directions of scientific research of department devoted: 1) – to a research of a regulation of processes of exchange of cetoacids and amino acids of catabolits of vitamins and some biologically active agents in an organism under conditions of different experimental pathologies 2) to a research of a regulation of biopower and plastic processes in the embrionic cells of mammals.

The purpose of the first scientific area of work is clarification of biochemical mechanisms of noncofermentic and cofermentic effect of some vitamins of group B, and also their metabolites, coenzymes and other derivatives at physiological, pathological and extreme conditions of an organism of invertebrates (on the example of the Black Sea mussels of Mytilus Galloprovincialis) and vertebrate animals (a mouse, a rat). The purpose of the second scientific area of work is the research of regulation of biopower and plastic processes in the embrionic tissues of mammals.

One of the scientific directions of department (since 1995) is the research of features of functioning of system of a proteolysis at an oncoprocess which is headed by professor of department of biochemistry, the Dr.Sci.Biol. Vovchuk I. L. In this direction more than 80 scientific publications are published, it is protected 1 doctor's and 2 master's theses.

In different years worked at department: honored worker of science and technology of Ukraine V. N. Totsky (Doctor of Biological Science, professor, academician of the Higher school, department chair of genetics and molecular biology of ONU), L. M. Karpov (Doctor of Biological Science, professor, department chair of human physiology and animals), V. T. Koval (к.б.н., associate professor, department chair of botany of ONU).

As a part of department 2 Dr.Sci.Biol. and 6 candidates of science work. The staff of department of biochemistry took part and made scientific reports at more than 100 foreign and domestic congresses, symposiums and conferences.
Graduates of department work in scientific institutions of Ukraine. Over 40 graduates of department of biochemistry work in biological and medical institutions of Scotland, Ireland, England, Denmark, Sweden, Germany, France, the Czech Republic, Italy, the United States of America, Australia and New Zealand.
