Digest of international events at the ONU I.I. Mechnikov National University in March 2017
The ONU International life in March was full of Greek and French events. On March 24, 2017, the University was visited by the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Greece in Ukraine, Mr. Georgios PUKAMISAS.
Also on March 24 the Rector of the University, prof. I. KOVAL, met a delegation headed by the President of the Greek-Ukrainian Chamber of Commerce in Piraeus, Mr. Janis POLIHRONOPOULOS, in order to discuss the possibility of writing the history of “Filiki Eteria” in collaboration with ONU specialists.
Mr. Ambassador and Greek-Ukrainian Chamber representatives visited Odessa in order to participate in the celebration of the national holiday of Greece - National Revival Day. The ONU students also took active part in the celebration’s organizing.
The V. Kornaros’ poem "Erotokrit” translation into Ukrainian, made by V. Stepanenko, was presented on March 24, 2017 in the Golden Hall of the Odessa Literary Museum. It should be noted that "Erotokrit" is a poem-romance, a masterpiece of Greek literature, written in the period of the Venetian rule (17th cent). The meeting was organized by the Foundation of Greek Culture (Odessa Branch), the Greek-Ukrainian Chamber (Piraeus, Greece), the State Archives of the Odessa Region.
The presentation program was created and presented by the students and lecturers of the Odessa National University (Department of International Relations, Institute of Social Sciences).
"Erotokrit" was considered by UNESCO as one of the 300 world literature masterpieces.
Along with the Greek events in ONU, the second decade of March was marked by French ones, such as the festival of French-speaking theaters in the frames of the "French Spring" and lectures by French political scientist Anne de TENGI. The month ended with the visit of the French delegation headed by Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of France to Ukraine, Mrs. Isabel DUMON, to ONU.
Mr. Rector told the Ambassador about the history and current activities of the university. Also Ms. DUMON got acquainted with the funds of the Museum of the rare books of the Scientific Library of ONU.
