The department of post-graduate study
Head Phedchuk Alexander Petrovich
Training of the staff of higher qualification, candidates and doctors of science is the major strategic task of the department of post-graduate study and doctorate of ONU. This department was founded as a scientific subdivision of the university in 1956. This year was also the top point of the qualitative and quantitative increase of the scientific-pedagogical potential of ONU after their return from evacuation during the World War II of 1941-1945. By that time the number of post-graduate students of ONU was only 74 people. There were 216 instructors among them 25 professors and 58 associate professors. It was a kind of start point of the development of the Odessa Mechnikov National University.
Senior inspector O.M. Larionova was in charge of the department of post-graduate study and doctorate for more than 30 years. The main growth of the university staff was at the end of the 20th century and at the beginning of the 21st century. The Candidate of Physics- Mathematical Science, associate professor O.P. Phedchuk has been in charge of the department since 1997. He himself graduated from the post-graduate study of the Physical department. He defended a thesis during his studies and prepared 5 candidates of science.
Nowadays there are more than 450 post-graduate students, more than 25 persons working for doctor’s degree in ONU. In fact all the instructors of ONU have successfully studied in the post-graduate school (more than 1000 people) and in the doctorate more than 100. Only during the years of Ukrainian independence more than 400 theses for Candidate’s degree and more than 100 theses for Doctor’s degree were defended by post-graduate students and employees of ONU.
The staff of the post-graduate department includes senior inspectors L.G.Grigorieva, N.S. Panaeva and S.B.Lukashuk. Thanks to the employees’ efforts the number of the professions ready for teaching and entered permanently working post-graduate study and doctorate of ONU has greatly increased. Now it has 106 denominations for post-graduate study and 54 denominations for doctorate. This figure is one of the highest even among leading universities of Ukraine and of the world, which are included into the list of universities according to the European and Universal association of universities.
The number of Ph.D. theses defense has increased and stabilized at 35-40 defenses a year, the number of Doctor’s degree defense is 5-7 a year. The majority of post-graduate students finish their studies in the department with the presentation of theses.
The planning of the highest qualification employees by the post-graduate and doctoral studies goes merely by the university's sub and completely according to the ONU's strategic plan for the current five-year period.
The post-graduate study department and doctorate of ONU work not only to support and restore the scientific-pedagogical potential of the university but also by requests from other leading Higher Educational Establishments of Odessa and the whole southern region of Ukraine.
